Oasis participates in release of Green Sea Turtles

We had an exciting event Oct 22 at Residential Oasis. Our business partner, Daniel Ponce, is also the District President of the Green Party in Veracruz, Mexico. They secured a section of land just south of Residential Oasis that is now reserved for endangered Green Sea Turtles for reproduction. As part of that, they brought 220 baby green sea turtles to the beach just south of our development to release them into the ocean.
Many local school children as well as friends and families came out for the big event. This provided a terrific opportunity to learn about the sea turtles and to help the children understand why it is important to preserve them.
The sea turtles have become extinct primarily because the turtles are hunted both for their eggs and meat. We hope that these children will stop that practice to help preserve the species. Each child personally released a turtle on the beach right in front of the ocean and watched them waddle their way into the surf and off into the sea.
Females must be 20 years or older before they reach sexual maturity. Once they are ready, they return to the place they entered the water to lay their eggs for the next generation. This is the reason for the reserve just behind where the turtles were released into the ocean. This section of beach was chosen due to the cleanliness of the beach and ocean in this area -a must for the mother turtles to lay their eggs. Our residents will be able to aid in the continued protection of those sea turtles when the females return in 20-25 years.
Those of you interested in participating in future turtle releases, email us.

November 1st, 2008 at 8:39AMHi Staccey, great photos and a most worthy adventure. Looks like you and your family are doing great. We have a growing ward, much happening and very busy. Bishop was recently invited to speak to the High Council to explain what's happening and how we are growing. Baptisms each month and people are staying. I still love my calling. Recently had 72hour kit building activity, good turnout, and put everything on display at the Stake centre couple weekends ago. Lots of people came by the tables and picked up handouts. Take care, keep in touch. Judi
